Currently awaiting construction in Kalulushi, Zambia, this house was designed to create and wrap around an internal landscaped courtyard, providing an opportunity for gardens and a water feature to mediate between the hot savannah climate and the shady, open living spaces and verandahs. Inspired by the early Persian architecture of neighbouring Tanzania, at night the courtyard provides a safe indoor-outdoor space, secured from the world beyond by folding breezy screens built into the perimeter of the house. The surrounding grounds will provide a picturesque landscape of fruit trees, lawns and small scale agriculture.
